We have LEAN experts as part of our team, who have experience of applying LEAN to both small, local companies and larger clients, such as JCB.
What Is LEAN?
LEAN is a management improvement model and process that, in simple terms, eliminates waste and increases efficiency, leading to greater profitability.
The LEAN Philosophy
The fundamental philosophy of LEAN is that every item of expenditure should be generating a profit. What do we mean by generating a profit? Well, anything a customer is willing to pay for.
Otherwise, it is not producing profit – as a customer is not covering the cost - and hence LEAN considers it wasteful. The LEAN process works to eliminate any wasteful activity. It also makes profit generating activities more efficient through improved production and management procedures.
The LEAN Outcome
LEAN is of benefit to a business because it increases profitability in two distinct ways. Firstly, by reducing wasteful activity/ expenditure (and therefore saving money). Secondly, by increasing the efficiency of profit making activities (and therefore yielding a greater profit margin per unit).
What Businesses is LEAN for?
Traditionally, LEAN was used to great success in the manufacturing, production and engineering sectors – chiefly due to its roots, having been developed by Toyota. But more recently, LEAN has been applied to sectors such as the NHS and business to business service providers. In reality, LEAN can be applied to any organisation that is producing a product or service through staff members and/ or production equipment.
